Ross Barkley believes the new social distancing rules are helping substitutes make more of an impact.

Chelsea midfielder Barkley believes the subs being forced to sit in the stands as part of Project Restart can help them get more of an overall picture of the game rather than being stuck in the dug-out at ground level.

It reaped rich rewards for Barkley who came on at half time and was a match winner for Chelsea at Leicester to fire Frank Lampard’s men into the FA Cup semi finals.

Barkley said: “It’s an advantage being able to watch from high up in the stands, being able to watch because you can see the space from the sides.

“Coming on for the second half, you can see where the space is and we created a lot more.

“When you are a fan, you are watching high up in the stands you can see the space but when you are down on the ground you are aware of it but you can’t see it so easily.

“Obviously you don’t want to be in the stands because it’s the worst place to be as a player but it helps out as well.”

Meanwhile, Barkley believes Lampard's ruthless desire to win trophies can give Chelsea the edge in the FA Cup.

Lampard won the competition four times as a player with Chelsea and they are seeking a ninth win overall.

And Barkley, who won the FA Cup with the Blues in 2018, feels the manager will continue to push the players.

He said: "It's the mentality of the club and the gaffer since he's been back. He wants to win every game and it's a trophy.

"Even before the lockdown we had big results against big sides and since we've been back we beat Man City in the week and at Leicester, against an excellent side, we won the game. It's given us confidence and hopefully we continue with it."
