CHELSEA 2-0 MANCHESTER CITY

83: I don’t think I’ve ever written this about Manchester City in the last two years but they are bang out of ideas. Chelsea are foiling every attack and have the visitors at arms length.

Phil Foden replaces Riyad Mahrez for the final seven minutes.

80: Just over 10 minutes to go. No coming back from this, right?

CHELSEA 2-0 MANCHESTER CITY | LUIZ

78: Whaaaaaaa?! Chelsea have scored a second to double their advantage at Stamford Bridge. Incredible scenes.

Eden Hazard whips a corner into the penalty area where David Luiz rises highest to divert the ball towards goal. The ball nestles into the net and Liverpool fans celebrate wildly…

78:Naive from Aymeric Laporte, who falls into Eden Hazard’s trap with a blatant foul on the right touchline. The free-kick was wasted but precious minutes ticking away.

Here comes Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Maurizio Sarri showing real faith in the talented youngster here. Willian heads off. The Blues are just having to soak up a bit of pressure - but Kepa has barely made a save.

75: Raheem Sterling looks to nip past Azpilicueta, who executes a perfectly-timed challenge inside the penalty area. Very brave because that would have been a penalty a few inches either way.

73: Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has not lost two straight league games since Oct. 2016 when he was the Napoli boss. That record should be preserved tonight because City have created precious little.

70: Dr Anderson suspects that David Silva has suffered a hamstring injury. And going into the hectic Christmas period - that is a disaster. Ilkay Gundogan replaces him.

68: You can literally feel the frustration from Pep Guardiola on the touchline. The fourth official is trying to calm him down. Good luck with that, mate.

65: Few handbags on-field as Jorginho collects a booking for ploughing through Riyad Mahrez. A few pushes and shoves but nothing too serious.

Maurizio Sarri makes an enforced change with the injured Mateo Kovacic being replaced by Ross Barkley.

63: City are really missing Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero right now. The duo would give the visitors another dimension going forward - because it’s not clicking right now.

60: Manchester City have been behind for the longest period that have all season.

59: Rattled? It looks that way. Chelsea have really got the stomach for this fight and are looking good at both ends of the field. Kyle Walker and Antonio Rudiger battle in the centre-circle before the City defender whacks it straight into the stands.

56: Leroy Sane went straight down the tunnel - presumably that means he’s injured? Anyway, the arrival of Gabriel Jesus means Riyad Mahrez moves to the right flank and Raheem Sterling shifts to the left.

54: Pep has seen enough and decides to throw Gabriel Jesus into the mix. The City boss knows something needs to change. It’s Leroy Sane coming off.

51: Don’t say it too loud - but Chelsea have dominated these early stages. City have barely had a kick!

48: Quite how Fernandinho avoided a booking there I’ll never know. He arrives late to the tackle and smashes Willian’s legs out from under him.

The Blues have a free-kick in an extremely dangerous position. Willian steps up… saved! One for the cameras certainly as Ederson palms it away.

CHELSEA 1-0 MANCHESTER CITY

45: And we’re back underway. Pep Guardiola is cooly sitting on the bench sipping water while Maurizio Sarri is arms folded on the touchline. Should be the other way around, shouldn’t it?

Anyway, we’re back underway with no changes for either side.

Twitter round-up

Richard: With the exception of the City fans-I believe almost every Premier League fan celebrated that goal like if it was their own team that scored.

Jay: Refreshing to know that Sarri-ball is not always one-way attacking but also pragmatic ball. I call this sensible-ball by Sarri.

Olly: City overplay...overplay...overplay. It's really about goals you know.

CHELSEA 1-0 MANCHESTER CITY

HT: Pep Guardiola’s side have dominated - but Chelsea have the lead going into the dressing room. The Blues rode their luck a little but kept their shape, patience and got their reward.

It’s only second time City have been behind in the Premier League all season. Last time was for 12 minutes at Wolves…

CHELSEA 1-0 MANCHESTER CITY | KANTE

44: Chelsea are ahead! The Blues have barely made it out of their own half but Maurizio Sarri won’t care one jot because N’Golo Kante has scored a rocket!

David Luiz starts the move off with a long searching ball over the top. Eden Hazard collects before sending a low cutback to Kante, who smashes a first-time effort past Ederson.

Chelsea fans happy, Liverpool supporters delighted!

42: City still not able to make their 66 percent possession count against a resilient Chelsea. You sense that Chelsea have weathered the first-half storm.

41: Kyle Walker nearly sending City fans into cardiac-arrest with a Cruyff Turn inside his own penalty area with Eden Hazard breathing down his neck. Fair play I suppose… it worked!

40: Chelsea fans: "Raheem Sterling, he runs like a girl." Yeah, a girl that's running rings around their defenders…

38: Fairly pathetic from David Luiz, who goes and stays down after a 50/50 collision with Raheem Sterling. He’s receiving treatment on the field but I highly doubt there’s anything wrong with him.

35:Manchester City are giving Chelsea the runaround here. Raheem Sterling roasts Marcos Alonso (again) before laying the ball over to Leroy Sane. Everyone is expecting the net to ripple but Azpilicueta throws himself in the way.

33:Roll up, roll up! Who else wants a shot at goal? Riyad Mahrez leaves Mateo Kovacic for dead before slipping a fine ball through to Leroy Sane, who puts Cesar Azpilicueta on his bottom. The winger pushes it wide and tees up David Silva, who sees his effort blocked.

30: Just clicked beyond the half-hour mark and nothing much has happened really. I suspect MOTD will cut this section out for the highlights.

27: Quite predictable. Chelsea can’t keep the ball for more than a few seconds because there is no focal point up front. Eden Hazard is dropping deeper to get involved but there’s nowhere to go if/when he wins it!

24: This could be a major blow for Pep Guardiola’s side as Fernandinho pulls up injured. He’s getting some treatment on the sidelines but I’m not convinced he’ll be able to continue.

21:Marcos Alonso loses patience with tiptoeing around Raheem Sterling and decides to clatter him over. Now what can City do with a free-kick? Nothing as it happens. David Silva’s cross alludes everyone and goes behind for a goal kick.

18:I don’t think Chelsea have completed more than five passes in Manchester City territory. The visitors look on another level even without Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero.

15:“Just hit it,” I hear thousands of Manchester City fans shouting. David Silva and Leroy Sane exhange some intricate passes around the penalty area with the German darting through. He should smash it first time but delays and allows Marcos Alonso to recover.

13: Jorginho is so slow and ponderous at times. He’s just been robbed by Fernandinho and then jogged back into position. Big teams have now cottoned on to his weaknesses.

10: Huge chance! Oh Raheem Sterling should open the scoring having been found unmarked in the middle by David Silva. He swipes at it but barely connects and Chelsea clear.

8: All the pundits and Jurgen Klopp himself have said that Liverpool’s win against Bournemouth won’t pile the pressure on Manchester City - I agree!

You really wouldn’t have guessed that this match was a must-win with Pep Guardiola’s side knocking it around without a care in the world.

5: David Silva can't wriggle through the gap on the left-hand side of the area and Jorginho arrives to clear the danger. First sight of Chelsea on the break with Eden Hazard travelling downfield and drawing a free-kick from Bernardo.

Laporte and Mahrez combine to clear the resulting set-piece.

3: Decent start here at the Bridge with Manchester City seeing the bulk of possession… what’s new? Chelsea look content to sit back and absorb the pressure. Obviously that makes the first goal absolutely crucial. Jeers from the home supporters as Fabian Delph hits a pass straight out of play.

CHELSEA 0-0 MANCHESTER CITY

1: Right, two of the best sides in Premier League in a must-win game. What could be better?

No word on whether Alvaro Morata is injured, but he is here sitting with the Chelsea subs on the bench. It appears as though he has been dropped from the squad altogether. Not entirely surprising if you ask me…

Twitter round-up

Tom: This has got ‘classic’ written all over it. Two fantastic managers with great philosophies playing great football.

Xavier: I'm crazy nervous about this game, either we're going step our game vs. Man City and give them game like Liverpool last year or completely fall apart and let up like 3 goals.

Lee Sykes: Is it me or is anyone else thinking that it will be either 7 goal thriller or a 1 goal with 0 strikers on the pitch.

Noel Fitzpatrick: Like all Liverpool fans I can sit back and relax and enjoy this one with my feet up!! And for me, I want a 1-1 draw...Wound two birds with the one stone.

Pep praise

17:20:Respectful discussion about other managers?! It’ll never last…

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he was impressed with the quick overhaul of Chelsea's playing style under Maurizio Sarri.

Sarri has turned Chelsea from a counter-attacking side into high-intensity team with that can dominate possession and Guardiola said he was a fan of the Italian's work.

"The job he has done so far, from my point of view, is excellent. Some people do not know how difficult it is to create a special way to play. You need time," Guardiola said. "Maybe they are not playing 90 minutes but when they play good for 50, 60, 70, 75 minutes, they are excellent."

Team news

17:10: Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri did not select a recognised striker against City at Stamford Bridge.

Eden Hazard expressed frustration at being asked to play as a 'false nine' against City under Antonio Conte, Sarri's predecessor, but the Belgium forward, without a goal in 11 matches for club and country, was set to be deployed in the position once again.

Gabriel Jesus was named only as a substitute so Raheem Sterling was poised to play in a similar role for City, who were bidding for a 14th win in their 16th league game of the season.

Starting XI...

17:05: Who needs a striker?! Both Manchester City and Chelsea are starting without a traditional forward this evening. Bold approach from Maurizio Sarri and Pep Guardiola methinks.

Chelsea: Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Pedro, Hazard, Willian.

Subs: Fabregas, Barkley, Loftus-Cheek, Caballero, Giroud, Christensen, Emerson Palmieri.

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Delph, Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Silva, Mahrez, Sterling, Sane.

Subs: Danilo, Kompany, Gundogan, Otamendi, Gabriel Jesus, Foden, Muric.

Evening…

17:00: Have you caught your breath? It’s been a bumper afternoon of Premier League action that includes a Mohamed Salah hat-trick, 17 goals and a cracking match at Old Trafford - who’d have thought?!

Now we turn our attentions to Stamford Bridge, where champions Manchester City will look to reclaim top position from Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola’s City will emphasise their Premier League dominance if they pick up three points against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge without the injured Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero.

Far from being title rivals, City go into the game with a 10-point advantage over the Blues, and another win would surely strike a terminal blow to Maurizio Sarri's men on the back of their midweek defeat at Wolves.

Shorn of arguably their two best players, a win would see City make another powerful statement.

CHELSEA vs MANCHESTER CITY

Jorginho and David Luiz are expected to return to Chelsea's starting line-up for Saturday's visit of Premier League leaders Manchester City. Blues boss Maurizio Sarri reported no serious injuries ahead of the clash and is expected to restore his first-choice line-up after Wednesday's loss at Wolves, a second defeat in three league games. Mateo Kovacic could start in midfield and Olivier Giroud could come in up front.

Manchester City pair Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne have been ruled out of the champions' Premier League trip to Chelsea. Striker Aguero is again not being risked due to a muscular problem while the game comes too early for playmaker De Bruyne (knee) after more than a month out. Left-back Benjamin Mendy (knee) and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo (Achilles) remain on the long-term casualty list.

Last season: Man City 1 Chelsea 0, Chelsea 0 Man City 1
