Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been ruled out of Chelsea’s Europa League final date with Arsenal later this month after suffering a ruptured Achilles during a friendly on Wednesday night.

The 23-year-old was seen using crutches and wearing a protective boot after limping off during Chelsea’s 3-0 win over New England Revolution in Boston in a charity match aimed at raising money for organisations fighting anti-semitism.

A short Chelsea statement on Thursday evening read: ‘Ruben Loftus-Cheek has seen a specialist today (Thursday) and will have surgery on his ruptured Achilles’ tendon this evening.

‘The Chelsea midfielder left the pitch during the second half of yesterday’s game in Boston, USA.’

Loftus-Cheek has grown into an influential member of Maurizio Sarri’s side over the past couple of months and news of his injury has come at the worst possible time for the player and his manager.

Not only will Loftus-Cheek miss the Europa League final on May 29, he will also be absent for England’s UEFA Nations League semi-final clash against the Netherlands on June 6 as well as the final a few days later should they make it.

England boss Gareth Southgate confirmed that Loftus-Cheek would have been in his squad, saying: ‘I went to bed last night and Ruben’s in the squad and playing brilliantly.

‘He misses now a major European final and a brilliant opportunity for us.’

Due to the nature of the injury, Loftus-Cheek could be set to face between six months and a year on the sidelines. Callum Hudson-Odoi suffered the same injury last month and has been ruled out of the start of the season.

Loftus-Cheek has played an important role in Chelsea’s run to the final, scoring four goals and providing three assists in the competition.
