Chelsea are keeping tabs on Diego Simeone's situation at Atletico Madrid, and could make a managerial change in the summer despite Frank Lampard's positive contribution at Stamford Bridge, according to reports in Italy.

Chelsea have been linked with Simeone in the past and are thought to be admirers, but have been held back by his lack of English and his commitment to Atletico.

The former midfielder and club legend was appointed in the summer to replace Maurizio Sarri and has them on course for a top four finish despite the transfer ban which stopped him signing anyone in the summer.

The ban has halved ahead of January but the club still failed to add to the squad, but they have since announced the signing of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax for the summer.

There was tension between the board and Lampard last month over the signing of a new striker.

"Look at Manchester United signing a big, big player, a world class player in my opinion," said Lampard.

"Tottenham have signed a few, and they're not far behind us. And not only have they signed a few, but a couple of players have left where they were towards the end of their contracts and maybe weren't happy being at the club. Sometimes that's as important as bringing players in."
