Chelsea’s second pre-season game ended in emphatic fashion as they overcame St Patrick’s Athletic in Dublin thanks to goals from Mason Mount, Emerson and Olivier Giroud, who notched twice.

Lampard made changes to the side which drew to Bohemians earlier in the week but once again there was plenty of opportunity for youngsters to showcase their talent.

And it was a youngster who gave Chelsea the lead as Mason Mount, who played for Lampard on loan at Derby lasts season, opened the scoring with a sweet finish.

Mount picked up a well-thought out pass from Jorginho and quickly moved out of the way of the goalkeeper before tapping home.

Chelsea’s midfield play continued to bewilder St Patricks, who gave up chance after chance.

Michy Batshuayi had two opportunities snuffed before Tammy Abraham shot high and wide with a wild effort.

Midfielder Ross Barkley then rattled the woodwork after finding the space to unleash a rocket from 20 yards.

The Blues wouldn’t escape the half without another goal, however.

Full-back Emerson picked up the ball from deep on the left but managed trickle his way forward before being urged to shoot by his team-mates.

The Italian did just that, rifling into the middle of the goal, straight through ‘keeper Barry Murphy.

More chances came and went for Chelsea as Barkley had a free-kick saved while Abraham had a one-on-one thwarted after some neat play from Mateo Kovacic in midfield.

Lampard then made wholesale changes at the half, swapping all 11 players for a new group which included Giroud, Cesar Azpilicueta, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Pedro.

But it was youngster Kasey Palmer who threatened earlier on, having his shot saved by a resilient Murphy.

Kenedy, who came on for Emerson, then provided the assist for Chelsea’s third, and Giroud’s first goal of the game.

A near-perfect ball saw Giroud connect sweetly on the half-volley as Chelsea ran away with the game.

Giroud then doubled his tally for the day by latching onto a ball on the left-hand side before forcing his way into the box where he finished with aplomb.

Chelsea will now head to the other side of the world as their pre-season tour continues in Japan where they’ll face Kawasaki Frontale and Barcelona.
