Kepa Arrizabalaga does have 'arrogant' side to him says former team-mate Rob Green as he praises under-fire Chelsea goalkeeper's 'strength of character'Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga has come under fire for mistakes this season The goalkeeper has been backed by his former Chelsea team-mate Rob GreenGreen highlighted his positive attributes and pointed out his arrogance

Kepa Arrizabalaga has been defended by former Chelsea team-mate Rob Green – who has hailed his 'strength of character'.

The Blues goalkeeper has been criticised this campaign for a number of high-profile mistakes, including a wayward pass that led to Everton's third goal in their clash last month.

That has led to doubts over the most expensive goalkeeper of all time but Green, who served as backup to Kepa and Willy Caballero last season, believes the dips in form are just part of being a goalkeeper.

But his former team-mate Rob Green (right) has defended him and highlighted his positives

'It's been a funny season for him, hasn't it?' Green told the Athletic. 'I think when you're playing so many games as a keeper, the fluctuations are going to be there.

'What he's got (in his favour)… he's got fantastic feet, a lot of power. He has big thighs, a lot of muscle and that gives him a big spring. He is very fast as well, comes with a lot of speed.'

Veteran Green, who announced his retirement in the summer, also highlighted Kepa's arrogance but admitted he was impressed by the 25-year-old's overall outlook.

'As a person he's a really nice lad, and he's got a fantastic attitude,' Green added. 'He does have this side of him which is arrogant, or certainly very confident in his own ability. It's that fine line and he has that. He carries the fact that he is the most expensive keeper in the world with him.

Green flagged up the impressive attributes that Kepa, the most expensive keeper ever, has

'There is that edge to him in training. We used to have these races. I was the slowest by a long, long way. He was so much quicker than all the keepers, but he still had to cheat (and get a head start). He would have won anyway, but he still had to cheat. I would cheat just to keep up.'

The 39-year-old also revealed that Kepa would sometimes dictate the exercises they would do in training sessions.

Green continued: 'Another thing he'd do in training is suddenly he will stop and say, "We've done all that. OK. Now I want this particular drill. This is what I need."

'It was fair enough. He is the one out on the pitch. But it shows a strength of character to speak up like that.'
