Tammy Abraham says an offer from Frank Lampard to wear Chelsea’s number nine shirt left him determined to end the ‘curse’ associated with the jersey. Abraham came through the Chelsea academy and made his debut for the club in May 2016. He then had three loan spells at Bristol City, Swansea and Aston Villa, scoring 60 goals altogether.

With a transfer ban hanging over the club, the hiring of Lampard and the sale of Alvaro Morata, Abraham was handed the chance to lead the line for Chelsea.

And he has returned the favour for Lampard, netting 11 goals in 20 appearances for the Blues so far this season.

He’s also been handed two international caps by England manager Gareth Southgate and he broke his duck in a 7–0 win over Montenegro in Euro 2020 qualifying.

Morata’s exit led to Abraham being given the coveted no 9 shirt which has been worn by Gonzalo Higuain, Radamel Falcao, Fernando Torres and Franco Di Santo dating back to 2008.

The last player to live up to the shirt was arguably Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink between 2000 and 2004.

But it finally appears as though Abraham is in a position to deliver for Chelsea.

And the 22 year-old says he is keen to create a legacy at Stamford Bridge.

“We talked about the play-off final, just me giving him and Jody Morris a bit of stick, but our first proper conversation was him asking if I wanted the number nine shirt,” Abraham told chelseafc.com.

“I’m still a bit star-struck sometimes,” he said.

“It’s nice to have Frank as our manager because he’s been there and done it all. When he’s saying something, you know he knows what he’s talking about.

“He’s a great coach as well. He always wants the best from us and he’s never one to hold grudges after a bad performance.

“He always wants to move on and be positive, which I think is the right mindset to have.”
