Maurizio Sarri saw several of his first team squad held to an embarrassing draw against the club’s youth team on Tuesday, just over 48 hours on from their humiliation at the hands of Manchester City.

Chelsea suffered their heaviest defeat since 1991 when they were crushed 6-0 at the Etihad on Sunday to heap further pressure on their beleaguered manager.

Although the FA Cup holders remain in contention for three competitions and trail Manchester United by just a single point in the race for fourth place, the wheels appear to be coming off in spectacular fashion following an encouraging start to Sarri’s tenure.

Chelsea were unbeaten until their defeat against Spurs in November but dreadful away form is threatening to undermine their league campaign, while Sarri’s deployment of N’Golo Kante in an unfamiliar position, his continued faith in summer signing Jorginho and refusal to place confidence in several of the club’s emerging youngsters is beginning to irk fans.

The players who featured on Sunday were undertaking warm-down exercises in the gym while those who didn’t play, including the likes of Willian and Olivier Giroud, took part in a training match and drew 3-3 against the youth team, according to The Times.

The former Napoli head coach is reported to have held a 60-minute meeting with those players involved at the weekend as he analysed the reasons for morale-sapping defeat.

Sarri is said to have been stunned at the nature of the loss, especially given how well the preparation had gone leading into the game.
