Real have struggled since Ronaldo left for Juventus in a £100million deal last summer and are looking to overhaul their squad with a huge spending spree at the end of the season.

Hazard remains top of their list of targets and are close to getting their man as his contract at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of the next campaign.

Chelsea could be forced to sell or risk losing him on a free but Zidane insists nobody brought to the club will be expected to fill Ronaldo’s sizeable shoes.

“The problem is that Cristiano cannot be replaced,” he said.

“He is gone, but we can bring any player and the player who comes will not do the same as Cristiano.”

Since Ronaldo left, Real have sacked two managers - Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari - and have slumped to third in the La Liga table.

They were knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 after a humbling 4-1 defeat by Ajax in front of their own fans.

As a result, sweeping changes will be made at the Santiago Bernabeu and Zidane reportedly has his sights set in a number of Premier League stars.

Liverpool’s Sadio Mane is also said to be a target after his stunning season for Jurgen Klopp's side.

Manchester United star Paul Pogba continues to be linked with a switch and previously admitted it was his dream to play for the Spanish giants.

"Like I've always said, Real Madrid is a dream for anyone. It's one of the biggest clubs in the world," Pogba said last month.

"There is also Zidane as a coach and it's a dream for anybody who likes football.

"For now, I'm at Manchester. We don't know what the future holds. I'm at Manchester and I'm happy."

Zidane did little to dampen therumourswhen he was quizzed on a move for his fellow Frenchman.

“I like Pogba a lot, it’s nothing new,” he said.

“I know him personally. He’s a different kind of player, he brings so much and there are few players who bring as much as he does.

“He’s a midfielder who knows how to defend and how to attack. He knows how to do everything on the pitch.”
