Ex-Tottenham star Kieran Trippier takes cheeky swipe at Arsenal

Kieren Trippier has taken a cheeky swipe at Arsenal - by claiming he never saw them as Tottenham's main derby rivals during his time in London.

The England right-back came up against the Gunners several times in the North London derby after joining Tottenham in 2015.

Having switched to Atletico Madrid in a shock £20million move last summer, Trippier faced rivals Real last September in his first taste of Spain's capital derby.

So, having been involved in two of football's most fiercely contested rivalries, how do they compare?

Trippier has been asked that question - and Arsenal fans probably won't like his response.

"It's so big out here the Madrid derby," the former Burnley defender told The Beautiful Game podcast.

"Even when I was playing for Tottenham, I felt - no disrespect to Arsenal - but I didn't feel like it was our main derby."

Trippier went on to say that he and many of his fellow Tottenham players felt that Chelsea were their big rivals.

"I felt it was Chelsea. I just felt like the emotion probably," the 29-year-old said.

"Don't get me wrong, Tottenham vs Arsenal is huge to the fans because it is what it is with them.

"As a player, for me and certainly for a few other players, the Chelsea game was a bigger game for them."

Trippier admits the intensity of the Madrid derby has been an eye-opener for him, saying: "The Madrid derbies... the pressure.

"Before every single game the president comes down and you don't see that in England.

"Just how family orientated it is in Spain is incredible. Just how they treated me, my wife and children, I've full respect for anyone associated with Atletico as they made me slot just straight in here and it's been perfect."
