Timo Werner has opened up on his decision to snub other elite sides to join Frank Lampard’s Chelsea this summer.

The Bundesliga star will be linking up with his new side next month after forfeiting his place in RB Leipzig’s Champions League run. The Blues sealed the deal for a fee of £54million despite it looking almost certain he would be joining Premier League rivals Liverpool instead.

Speaking to SportBuzzer (via, Werner has revealed what made the London outfit so attractive to him. The striker admitted he could’ve joined any of the other teams who had shown interest, with the big names being Liverpool, Manchester United and Inter Milan.

“The entire Chelsea package in the end, however, turned out to be the best in my career. Money played a marginal role,” Werner continued. “For me, money was never a decisive factor, otherwise I could have gone to China.”

The 24-year-old tallied an astounding 28 goals in the Bundesliga this season and 34 goals, 13 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions (via Transfermarkt). Werner finished the 2019/20 campaign as the league’s second highest goalscorer, behind only Robert Lewandowski (via BBC Sport).

Chelsea will welcome their new signing next month, joining fellow new recruit Hakim Ziyech. The Blues are currently fourth in the Premier League table and will secure Champions League football next season if they can continue their positive run of form.

“Chelsea is a leading club in European football. There is a team of great quality, we want to get to the top. I don’t regret my decision for even a second.”
