Less than 10 months separates Reece James and Tariq Lamptey but it is clear that the former has a long future paved in front as Chelsea's first-choice right back.

A penny for the thoughts of Steve Holland as he watched Chelsea's 3-1 win away to Brighton & Hove Albion last night, a game in which the build-up was dominated by talk of a £200million revolution in West London but ended up being more about the performances of two young English right backs nurtured in the academy.

I know Reece can catch his shots.

He's young and has to carry on improving.

That was one large reason the latter decided in January that he wanted to leave the club in search of regular game time, moving to the south coast and almost immediately exeeding expectations for Graham Potter's side.

James turns 21 in December, Lamptey is 20 later this month and Alexander-Arnold is 22 next month.

"Right back is a position for me where I have got two quality players with different attributes," Lampard said.
