Former Chelsea captain John Terry was livid with the performance of referee Anthony Talyor during the Blues’ FA Cup final defeat against Arsenal.

Frank Lampard appeared destined to win the first trophy of his managerial career when Chrisitan Pulisic slotted the favourites into an early lead, but his side failed to build on an encouraging start.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang drew Arsenal level from the penalty spot after he was hauled down in the box by Cesar Azpilicueta but the match turned in the 73rd minute when Taylor awarded Mateo Kovaic a second yellow card following an innocuous looking challenge on Granit Xhaka.

The Arsenal captain had put the Gunners ahead five minutes earlier, capping a fine flowing move by bamboozling Kurt Zouma and dinking the ball over Willy Caballero, but Terry thought Hector Bellerin should have been penalised for a foul on Andreas Christensen.

Terry reacted on Instagram, saying: ‘Never a second yellow, and surely that was a foul in the build up to the second goal.’

Lampard, meanwhile, struggled to comprehend how VAR was unable to get involved and overturn the decision to send off Kovacic when replays appeared to indicate it was Xhaka who initiated contact.

He said: ‘What Kind of rule is that? There’s always been a rule about you can’t challenge two yellows and all this stuff but someone is sitting there really stubbornly sticking to their guns on that one.

‘We have VAR so let’s use it as much as possible to get the right decision. That’s nowhere near, that changes the game. It was never a red card.’

Despite feeling his side failed to get the rub of the green in a match which also saw Azpilicueta, Pulisic and Pedro suffer serious injuries, Lampard accused his team of failing to turn up for the big occasion.

He said: ‘We started well for 10-15 minutes and we can only blame ourselves form that point.

‘We got complacent, we took time on the ball like it was a stroll and we allowed them into the game. It’s hard to get back into the game then. A lot of today is on us.

‘All I can do form the sidelines is shout! There are elements in our game that we have worked hard on all year but that is in you as a group.

‘Today we were slow, we played back on ourselves, invited pressure. We didn’t play well enough to win a final.’
