Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho insists he’s not an ‘enemy’ of Manchester United and was always ‘happy’ at the club.

The Portuguese coach returns to the Theatre of Dreams on Wednesday for the first time since he was sacked 11-and-a-half-months ago.

Mourinho won the League Cup and Europa League during his first season at the club and United were runners-up to Manchester City in the League and Chelsea in the FA Cup during his second term.

However, relations between Mourinho and his board soured before his third campaign due to disagreements over the direction of the club.

Nevertheless, Mourinho insists he is looking forward to returning to his club and says he has ‘great relations’ with United fans.

‘Going back to Old Trafford is to go back to a place where I was happy,’ said Mourinho.

I can say that. I have a great relation with the United supporters. I went back as a pundit, which is a different perspective. I was really humbled by such a beautiful reception.

‘I left the club. I took my time to process everything that happened, took my time to prepare myself for the next challenge and honestly Manchester United for me now is in my book of experiences, my history book.

‘At United I won and I learned. My time after I left was a good time for me. It is not for me to analyse United now. I analyse them as an opponent, how they play. How can we beat them? How can they beat us? For me that is the important thing

‘A nice reaction is probably to me but during the game the support will be for Solskjaer. That’s the nature of a place with an incredible history & with fans that understand clearly what passion for a club is. They love their club, so they love Solskjaer.

I’m not a villain, I’m not an enemy but I am the coach that is trying to win against Manchester United. That’s the way I think they (the fans) are going to look at me.’
