'That was my mistake and not his as I made the decision': Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he made selection error with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in UEFA Super Cup clash against ChelseaAlex Oxlade-Chamberlain made his first competitive start since last AprilThe England international suffered a serious knee injury against Roma in 2018He was named in the front three for Liverpool's clash vs Chelsea on Wednesday

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted he shouldn't have named Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the starting line-up against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup.

Oxlade-Chamberlain returned to the starting line-up for the first time since suffering a serious knee injury last April in the quarter-final Champions League clash with Roma.

And Klopp used deployed him in the front three alongside Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane but he has since conceded it was a mistake on his behalf.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain started his first competitive match for Liverpool since April last year

Oxalde-Chamberlain was hauled off at half-time and replaced by Roberto Firmino as they went on to lift the Super Cup following a penalty shoot-out.

After the match, Klopp told the Liverpool Echo: 'I didn't say a lot to Ox [at half-time] I don't think it was necessary. It was very important for him to have these minutes.

'It's a position he can play and he can play much better than he did tonight. That's how it is after a long injury, you have to find your rhythm.

'In training it's already there. In the game he had good moments but not enough for his quality. It was a very intense game and I had to make that decision because I didn't want to push him.

'We wanted to give him an opportunity to shine. It wasn't as possible as we would have wished in that position, but that was my mistake and not his as I made the decision.'
