Liverpool could be forced to welcome back midfielder Pedro Chirivella to Anfield two weeks after he left the club.

Failing that, he will return to Anfield and feature for the club's Under-23 team before his contract expires in the summer, when he'll leave for good.

With the prospect of breaking into Jurgen Klopp's plans again now long gone, Chirivella agreed a move back home to Spain join Segunda Division side Extremadura on loan.

The 21-year-old hasn't played a competitive game for the Reds since a 3-1 defeat at Swansea in May 2016, his fifth appearance for senior side.

After loan spells at Dutch clubs Go Ahead Eagles and Willem II since then, the former Valencia youth product - who has also played at centre-back for the Reds - seemed certain to leave Anfield last summer, only for prospective moves to Celtic and Rosenborg to collapse.

The Reds will hope that a compromise can be reached and that Chirivella will be allowed to feature for Extremadura this term.

But, as reported by the Evening Standard , he has yet to play for the southern Spain-based side, and has now had his registration called into question by the Spanish authorities.
