Luis Suarez admitted he can understand why Liverpool fans are upset with him, but did not apologise

Suarez left Anfield after his 31 Premier League goals during the 2013-14 season took the club to the brink of the title, before they capitulated in games against Crystal Palace and Chelsea during the run-in and conceded the crown to Manchester City.

After three years with Liverpool, he left to join Barcelona in a deal worth £75milion and has since filled his trophy cabinet with personal and collective accolades for his efforts with the blaugrana.

His antics in the Champions League semi-final last summer riled some fans as he celebrated scoring against them in the first leg, before being his usually antagonistic self in the second.

Reflecting on his time at Liverpool, and just missing out on the title, he told their official website: “In the last year when I played there at Anfield I was so sad for the supporters [that we missed out on the title].

Suarez’s actions in the first and second leg of the Champions League semi-finals annoyed some Liverpool fans

“I know some Liverpool supporters were angry with me because I celebrated a goal against Liverpool here in Camp Nou [last season] and for that I am so sad.

“I accept that and I say that hopefully they understand my situation: we were playing at home and in the Champions League semi-final.

“I lived one of the best moments of my life there and I think the supporters didn’t forget how my attitude was in the Liverpool shirt.

“Now hopefully they are so happy with the Premier League trophy this year.”

The Uruguay international has nothing but respect and admiration for pal Henderson

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side are without doubt one of the greatest in Premier League history and still have plenty more records they can possibly break.

And one man who will be delighted to collect a Premier League winner’s medal is Jordan Henderson, whom Suarez singled out for praise.

He added: “When I saw last year [him winning] the Champions League, I was so happy for him. Why? Because as some people know he had some problems with his dad and he had really good moments and some bad moments in Liverpool.

“When he lifted the trophy, the dream is done but this season I [will be happy to] see him lifting the [Premier League] trophy because he is a really good person.

Andy Robertson says Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson should win Player of the Year - 'Hendo represents us all'

“I speak sometimes with him and I said to him, ‘You have a really good chance this season’ and he is so excited.

“We watch some [Liverpool] games when we can and we see that Jordan, he is the captain from the midfield.

“He speaks a lot and for his teammates this is so important, when they have confidence with the captain.

“For me, Jordan is one of the best captains in Liverpool’s history.”
