Kai Havertz will be an amazing signing for Chelsea, but the Blues should also break the bank to sign Jan Oblak.

That’s the thinking of Dimitar Berbatov, who has been impressed by Chelsea’s summer spending so far.

The Blues have brought in Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech in deals worth over £80m. But their spending shows no signs of relenting.

Our exclusive on Friday revealed that Chelsea and Leverkusen are close to agreeing a structured transfer for Havertz.

That prospective deal has been hailed by Berbatov. But he also thinks the club should pin their focus on signing a world-class keeper next in the shape of Oblak.

“They for sure need a goalkeeper and Jan Oblak would be a great option,’ Berbatov told Betfair. “Timo Werner was a good deal, and Willian looks like he might stay if they win the FA Cup.

“There are still rumours about Kai Havertz who would be an amazing player for them.”

Certainly finding a new goalkeeper looks a priority for Chelsea this summer. The Blues have also been linked with Ajax’s Andre Onana and Nick Pope of Burnley amid doubts over Kepa Arrizabalaga’s long-term future.

Chelsea back-up goalkeeper Willy Caballero, meanwhile, has backed Kepa to stay at Stamford Bridge.

Kepa has endured a turbulent second season as Chelsea’s first choice keeper. Lampard dropped him on two occasions for the more experienced Caballero.

However, the Argentine is fully behind his teammate staying on and says he’s still well equipped to be a long-term success for Chelsea.

“Of course I hope he stays,” said Caballero.

“I have known him for two years. Last season was very good for him. This season there were some other things happening, but last year was fantastic.

“He is still the number one goalkeeper for Spain, and is a great goalkeeper.

“We have a great relationship – first of all because we speak the same language.

“We work together well in training. It was the second time that Frank left him out, but in terms of our relationship he has been very good.

“He has been behind me, helped me with everything in the games that I have played.

“That’s all I can say about Kepa. He has shown me and all of us a great face, even in the worst moments for him. That is so professional from him.

“The way that he worked during those weeks and in the last week, he was excellent.”
