Mason Mount and Ross Barkley's rivalry is set to continue - for England more than Chelsea

By the time Mason Mount made way for Ross Barkley after 72 minutes, with the game still in the balance, England found themselves in unfamiliar territory.

A team that has become accustomed to strolling through qualifying games were being outplayed by a Czech Republic side that may not have as much natural talent but displayed far greater intensity.

Mount did little wrong but this was a difficult assignment in what had always promised to be the trickiest test of the group stage.

England were careless in possession, unable to gain any control and second best for very long spells.

Until that stage opportunities to get on the ball were rare for Mount and he may have been forgiven for drawing parallels with Chelsea considering England's slack marking at set pieces, with Michael Keane particularly culpable for the Czechs' equaliser after Harry Kane had scored from the penalty spot early on.

Mount was working hard to press Czech Republic defenders into errors but proved too eager when fouling Jan Boril near the touchline midway through the first half.

For a spell midway through the second period England looked more purposeful and were at least countering with some degree of threat.
