Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has urged Maurizio Sarri to avoid signing Mateo Kovacic on a permanent deal from Real Madrid.

The Croatia international is currently on a season-long loan at Stamford Bridge but Chelsea could make the move permanent if they meet Madrid's £42 million valuation.

Kovacic is understood to be open to remaining at Stamford Bridge but if Chelsea fail to overturn or delay their two-window transfer ban, he would be unable to stay at the club.

Hasselbaink feels Kovacic has not been used to his full potential at Chelsea and that his former club should look for a more attacking midfielder.

'I don't think Chelsea should pursue Kovacic,' Hasselbaink told Bwin.

'Kovacic is a defensive midfielder and that is where he performed best at Real Madrid, but Chelsea are already blessed with Jorginho and Kante in that role.

'Chelsea need a midfielder who has creativity and can split defences with a final pass, who can set up strikers and achieve assists, but this is not Kovacic's strengths.
