Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed that he will take a year out of football management to ‘take his personal life back in hand’ amid links with Chelsea.

The Italian tactician, who won five consecutive Serie A titles at Juventus along with three Coppa Italia trophies, had been the subject of intense speculation regarding his future.

Allegri has been linked with the Chelsea job with Maurizio Sarri on his way to Juventus after compensation was agreed, while Manchester United and Spurs were also mentioned.

A return to AC Milan was also rumoured, but the 51-year-old has decided to take a year out from management after 16 years in a row.

“I am going to take a year off to recharge the batteries and take my personal life back in hand, rediscover after many years the affection of my family, children and friends,” he said at an event in Milan.

“The last 16 years have felt like being in a blender. You have to take time away from what you usually spend with family and friends.

“I’ll use this year to recharge my batteries ahead of the next season.”

Chelsea now look certain to turn their attention to club legend Frank Lampard to fill the void left by Sarri’s imminent exit.
