Germany legend Oliver Bierhoff has backed compatriot Timo Werner to be a big hit in the Premier League with Chelsea, saying his ‘obsessive quest for goals’ will continue in west London.

The 24-year-old is set to join the Blues this summer after his £47.5m release clause at RB Leipzig was triggered.

The forward has enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Leipzig, scoring 95 goals in 159 games across all competitions over the last four seasons.

Unsurprisingly his exploits attracted the attention of bigger clubs and Chelsea beat the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Inter Milan to his signature, with the German now set to line-up in a blue shirt at the start of next season.

Bierhoff, who scored 37 goals for Germany and is now the managing director for national teams and academy at the German FA, knows what it is like to leave his homeland and achieve great success elsewhere.

The hulking striker became one of the most feared forwards in Serie A, playing for Udinese, and AC Milan, while also having spells elsewhere at Monaco, Chievo, Ascoli and Austria Salzburg.

The 52-year-old believes Werner has the qualities to shine abroad, he will just need to get used to his new surrounding.

‘In a foreign country, you are left to your own devices,’ Bierhoff told the Athletic. ‘There’s a risk factor involved, but I would always do it again because you mature so much. Italy was a shock to me at first.

‘You believe football is the same everywhere, but it’s totally different everywhere. The people are different, the dressing room humour is different, communication is different, the game is different.

‘You need a bit of time to get used to it. There is an expectation on you that you should not take too long, of course, but I believe that Timo’s obsessive quest for goals and his ambitiousness will help him settle quickly.

‘He doesn’t look left or right too much, he’s focused on scoring and performing well. And with his pace, he will score goals in England, I’m sure.’

Werner is excited to get started on his new challenge and in particular begin work with Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, who was pivotal in convincing him to move to Stamford Bridge ahead of his other options.

‘The discussions with the board at Chelsea were so good that I ultimately chose them,’ Werner told Sky Germany.

‘Frank Lampard in particular stood behind me and really wanted me to know that if I went to Chelsea, I could feel just as comfortable as I do with Leipzig.

‘In the conversations with me, the coach often emphasised how much he wanted me, how much he valued me as a person.’
