Pat Nevin explains why Ross Barkley was wrong to take penalty vs Valencia

Pat Nevin believes Ross Barkley shouldn’t have taken the late penalty against Valencia in what could potentially be a damaging Champions League loss for Chelsea and that Jorginho should have been the man to step up instead.

The England international blazed his spot kick over the bar as he failed to salvage a draw on Frank Lampard’s managerial debut in Europe’s premier competition, with Chelsea going down 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Jorginho and Willian both expressed interest in taking the penalty on the night but Lampard was adamant Barkley is the Blues’ taker going forwards.

However, former Chelsea star Nevin thought it was always going to be a tough spot kick for him to take given the former Everton man had just come off the bench, while he rates Jorginho as the better penalty specialist anyway.

Jorginho should have taken the penalty, says Nevin (Picture: Soccrates/Getty Images)

‘I said in the commentary, I don’t really want Ross taking the penalty,’ Nevin told Chelsea TV. ‘Simple reason. Ross is a good penalty kick taker, but he’s just on the pitch.

‘Now, if you’re just on the pitch, it doesn’t mean you can’t take a penalty, but if you know the pace of the game, you’re up to speed and you’re comfortable with it all then it’s that little bit easier.

‘I just happen to love Jorginho’s penalty kicks. I’ve watched him taking them for years before he came to Chelsea, and he’s missed one during a football match in his career and he scored from the rebound.’

‘Yes, there was the one against Manchester City in the EFL Cup, the ‘keeper saved that, but his penalty kicks are absolutely extraordinary.

‘Had Eden Hazard not been taking the penalty kicks for us [last season] with the extraordinary ones he had been taking, I think we’d have seen a lot more of Jorginho’s last season, and we’d be in love with them by now.’
