Phil Neville believes that Scott McTominay has emerged as a key player for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United as he has the character to make a difference in big matches.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season featuring 22 times in all competitions and he played the full 90 minutes during Sunday’s 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea.

With Manchester United deciding against signing replacements for Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini, McTominay looks set to have an important role to play this season.

Neville acknowledged that there are more skilful players out there but insisted that McTominay deserves his place in the side as a reward for the sheer hard work he has put into his game.

‘He’s an impressive young man, Neville said. ‘There are probably more skilful players, players with better reputations than McTominay, but if you’re talking about character and resilience, that lad’s gone through it all to get to where he wants to be.

‘That’s through sheer hard work, dedication and training and doing extra. It’s no coincidence Jose Mourinho picked him in the biggest games against Chelsea and PSG, and Ole’s doing the same now.

‘There’s nothing better than a level-headed young lad absolutely working his socks off. The fundamental basis of any successful person is hard work, and Scott McTominay is doing that in abundance.’

McTominay’s midfield partnership with Paul Pogba showed signs of promise against Chelsea as he sat in front of the back four impressively to allow the Frenchman greater license to move forward.

Despite enduring a slow start to his United career, McTominay has become an increasingly popular player amongst supporters due to his wholehearted displays in midfield.
