Former Manchester United ace Phil Neville believes Frank Lampard needs to strengthen his midfield if Chelsea are to have any chance of winning the Premier League next season.

Lampard’s impressed during his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge and his side are on course for a place in the top four, despite the fact he was unable to sign players in his opening two transfer windows at the club.

The Blues are also through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, where they’ll face Neville’s former side Manchester United.

Despite having a host of things to play for in the remainder of the season, Lampard is already planning for the next campaign and has recruited Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner to add more firepower to his side.

However, Neville believes Chelsea’s problems lie in their lack of creativity in midfield and he believes Christian Pulisic should be moved inside to play in the ‘Eden Hazard role’.

‘Mason Mount is a really good player but probably he isn’t the type of creative player that makes the final pass,’ Neville told Premier League Productions.

‘Mateo Kovacic for me flatters to deceive sometimes. He’s good on the eye but does he play [that pass]?

‘I think it’s the one area where you say can they get Christian Pulisic more central? That’s the one I’d be thinking about.

‘If they’re going to win leagues you need some player that is going to be really special and that’s what Eden Hazard was for them.

‘Cesc Fabregas was for them too and I don’t think they’ve replaced Fabregas since he left. I think a no10 is a position – Manchester United have gone out and bought Bruno Fernandes – it’s a position where you need to buy the best.’

Chelsea are interested in Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz, who has played attacking midfield for the Bundesliga giants.

However, Lampard only has a limited remaining budget and must sell to raise some extra funds if he’s to complete a squad makeover this summer.

The Blues are interested in Leicester defender Ben Chiwell but the Foxes are set to demand in excess of £70m for the England international.
