Phil Neville has given his take on what Frank Lampard and Chelsea need to do if they want to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

As it stands, the Blues are well on their way to securing Champions League football. An exciting season sits on the horizon as Chelsea wait to deploy new signings Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

However, the current England Women’s manager thinks that there’s still room for improvement and has dipped into what Manchester United have that the London outfit doesn’t.

Speaking to Premier League Productions (via Metro), Neville has admitted he thinks Chelsea are lacking creativity in the middle of the park.

Yes No

He said: “If they’re going to win leagues you need some player that is going to be really special and that’s what Eden Hazard was for them,” the former defender said. He then went on to critique Lampard’s current midfield.

“Mason Mount is a really good player but probably he isn’t the type of creative player that makes the final pass. Mateo Kovacic for me flatters to deceive sometimes. He’s good on the eye but does he play [that pass]?”

Neville has advised the club to play Christian Pulisic in a more central role in order to maximise the chances created from the midfield. Ultimately, he has stated the Blues must recruit a natural attacking midfielder.

“Cesc Fabregas was [special] for them too and I don’t think they’ve replaced Fabregas since he left. I think a No.10 is a position – Manchester United have gone out and bought Bruno Fernandes – it’s a position where you need to buy the best.”

Indeed, Chelsea have been unsettled on a permanent midfield trio this season, rotating between their options regularly. They are however, linked to £90m-rated Bundesliga star Kai Havertz, who could be exactly what Neville is talking about. The playmaker has tallied a total of 16 goals and nine assists across all competitions this season (via Transfermarkt).

Fernandes is a great example of bringing in a squad-changing player. In just seven league games, the Spaniard has made six goal contributions for United, who are also chasing down a top four spot. It will be intriguing which of the two clubs will finish the higher this season and subsequently mount a more sustained title challenge next term.
