For Tammy Abraham, the 1-0 win over Leicester City would have been a real relief.

The Chelsea striker has been Frank Lampard’s main man over the course of the 2019/20 campaign, leading the line.

With 13 Premier League goals, it has been an encouraging first campaign for him as Chelsea’s number nine.

However, an ankle injury before the suspension of the season due to COVID-19 meant that the 22-year-old had a longer lay-off than most.

Before yesterday’s FA Cup win, the last game that the England international had started was also against Leicester, but back in February.

It had been almost five months since Abraham had got another chance to start, due to the form of Olivier Giroud as his stand-in.

And after the final whistle, Abraham’s reaction showed just how tough it had been for him to play a full 90 minutes.

As soon as Mike Dean had put the whistle to his lips, Abraham immediately fell to the floor and lay strewn along the ground.

There was no real celebration from the striker, more pure exhaustion from the shift that he had put in over his first full 90 minutes since January 21.

It was a tough afternoon for Abraham, who spent the majority of the game up against the physical presence of Caglar Soyuncu.

Abraham had battled hard over the course of the 90 minutes and in the final ten had been on the burst on several breaks.

The striker didn’t have the chance to score on those occasions, but he was really trying to put himself in the position to get the opportunity.

Lampard still has a decision to make over who will be the regular starter for the rest of the campaign.

But in the long-term future, Abraham has shown that he can be a big player for the Blues and a real leader up front.
