'Frank Lampard in particular stood behind me and really wanted me to know that if I went to Chelsea, I could feel just as comfortable as I do with Leipzig.

'In the conversations with me, the coach often emphasised how much he wanted me, how much he valued me as a person,' the player continued.

'Of course it's hard to give up an oasis of well-being like the one I've had in Leipzig for years, but you can only get ahead in a career if you take the next step.

'This season was the crossroads, otherwise I would always have stayed with Leipzig. I've decided on something new and I hope that my form will continue like this.'

The striker has scored 32 goals and provided 13 assists for his team-mates in all competitions this season and Rudiger is hoping he will be a success in the Premier League.

Antonio Rudiger has joked that he will be in trouble if Chelsea's new signing is not a success after convincing the club to buy him.

Rudiger said: 'From next season, Timo will have to deliver, otherwise I will get in trouble from the club again afterwards.

'Although he is not a classic penalty area striker, he has a certain robustness to face the English toughness.'
