Spanish side Valencia have sacked coach Marcelino - less than a week before they open their Champions League campaign against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

This weekend they head to Camp Nou to face reigning champions Barcelona , before heading to London for their opening Champions League group game on Tuesday night.

The latter achievement ensured they reached Europe’s premier club competition for the second successive campaign, after Marcelino ended a seven-year wait.

Los Che currently sit 10th in La Liga, with four points from three matches.

The La Liga side have dismissed the 54-year-old, who led them to success in the Copa del Rey and secured a top four finish last term.

However, amid behind the scenes tension, a club statement on Wednesday confirmed: “Valencia told Marcelino Garcia Toral on Wednesday that he is no longer first team coach.

Lim, who is also the majority shareholder of Salford City, owning 40 per cent, has been determined to take more control over transfers and sporting decisions, something which Marcelino and Alemany had previously resisted.
