Chelsea midfielder Willian has suggested he will sign a short-term extension to his current deal to see out the rest of the season.

The Brazilian is out of contract on June 30 and is expected to leave Stamford Bridge as a free agent, having rejected the club’s offer of a new two-year deal.

Premier League clubs returned to non-contact training this week ahead of a possible restart of the season next month.

The coronavirus shutdown means that fixtures are likely to run into July and August, so players like Willian will need to agree new deals with their respective clubs.

Teammates Willy Caballero and Olivier Giroud – who were both in the same situation – have signed extensions that run until the end of next season, but the 31-year-old is not expecting to do the same.

“It's a difficult situation because Chelsea offered me two years and they are not going to change what they offered. I said I wanted three more years,' the winger told Brazilian outlet Esporte Interativo.

“The situation is difficult because of this. I really don't know if it will be possible [to stay]. My goal is to continue working and focus on the remainder of the season, so that Chelsea can continue winning games.

“I have a clear head and I'm focused for the rest of the season that we have left. I think it's difficult [to stay]. Let's see what happens.”
