Chelsea secured a hard-fought three points against Dean Smith’s resilient Aston Villa to end their winless run in the league at just two games.

The Blues received a boost pre-match with the news that in-form centre-forward Tammy Abraham was fit enough to retake his place leading the Chelsea line.

The 21-year-old wasted little time in returning to the scoresheet after he rose high to nod in Reece James’ pinpoint cross to give Chelsea the lead after 24 minutes.

Villa stabilised and levelled the scores minutes before half time when Trezeguet somehow bundled the ball over the line after Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross.

VAR took a long look after suspicions were raised of a handball but the goal was given.

Parity was short lived, however, when Mason Mount lashed home a rasping effort in the 48th minute after a deft lay-off from Abraham.

Chances came and went in the second half but the scores remained the same as Frank Lampard’s men returned to winning ways at Stamford Bridge.
